      <image:title>About - What is a Hearing Dog?</image:title>
<image:caption>When the dogs hear a sound (they have incredible hearing) they gently paw their companion to let them know they’ve heard something and then lead them there. They can learn to recognize and alert their person to sounds like: Smoke / Fire Alarms Alarm Clocks Door Knock / Door Bell Telephone Ringing / Text Message Portable Timer Baby Monitor Other sounds specific to their person’s environment How does it work? Deafness is an ‘invisible’ disability. It continues to be surrounded by misunderstanding. As a result, many deaf and hearing impaired people often experience feelings of isolation, loneliness and frustration. Apart from alerting the person to the sounds there are many other tangible benefits of Hearing Dogs for the Deaf. Enhanced self-confidence, self esteem and sense of well-being Companionship Greater independence Increased security Reduced stress Social interaction New interest and responsibilities Moderate, regular exercise</image:caption>

New Zealand Lions have become part of an exciting venture to aid the country's hard of hearing. In early 2021, Lions teamed with national body Hearing Dogs NZ to support them in training hearing dogs for the deaf and hard of hearing. <image:caption>Hearing Dog puppies are sourced from all over New Zealand, from private owners, breeders and even rescue centres. The dogs do not have to be pedigree. They do need to be friendly, outgoing, intelligent and really interested in sounds. These dogs change the lives of their recipient, reducing isolation and giving a new freedom. The dogs love to work! How do we train a Hearing Dog? We make training fun for our dogs by using reward based training. This means we base our training around games, treats and fuss. <image:caption>We rely on the generosity of many volunteers in a wide range of roles throughout our work to create Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Two key areas we are seeking help with are puppy socialising and awareness ambassadors. More information about these roles below, please get in touch with us if you are able to assist Hearing Dogs in a voluntary capacity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Get Involved - Ambassadors</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the biggest challenges we face is raising awareness of the role and value of Hearing Dogs. Having registered speakers who can give presentations on our behalf means we are able to raise the profile of Hearing Dogs across the country. We are frequently asked to give short presentations to service groups, clubs and other gatherings; however, we have limited people trained to undertake such engagements. If you think you could help as a speaker please contact us. We will provide appropriate training and resources to enable you to undertake such engagements. Speakers provide their services on a voluntary basis, free of charge. Get in touch to find out more and register your interest.</image:caption>
